The winter months are creeping upon us fast, which provides the perfect excuse to head indoors and discover some art. Here are some of the most notable exhibitions from around Australia.

  1. The Picasso Century – National Gallery of Victoria

This world-premiere Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition charts the extraordinary career of Pablo Picasso in dialogue with the many artists, poets and intellectuals with whom he intercepted and interacted throughout the 20th century.

  1. Know My Name: Australian Women Artists 1900 To Now – National Gallery of Australia

12 Jun 21–26 Jun 22

This is one of the most comprehensive presentations of art by Australian women ever assembled. It looks at moments in which women created new forms of art and cultural commentary (such as feminism), and highlights creative and intellectual relationships between artists across time.

  1. Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2022 – Art Gallery of NSW

14 May 22–28 Aug 22

The Archibald Prize for portrait painting is the country’s favourite and most significant art award. The Wynne Prize is awarded to the best landscape painting of Australian scenery, or figure sculpture, while the Sulman Prize is given to the best subject painting, genre painting or mural project in oil, acrylic, watercolour or mixed media.

  1. Light: Works from Tate’s Collection – ACMI

Curated by Tate in the UK and drawn from their prestigious collection, it covers over 200 years of art history, and the artists who harnessed light through painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, installation and the moving image.

A snapshot of the most exciting contemporary work being produced in the region, this exhibition is a selection of installations, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and video from ‘The 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’.
