Halloween doesn’t have to be just about kids trick or treating! Enjoy an evening for adults that doesn’t involve makeup, costumes, or walking the streets knocking on strangers’ doors, but still revels in the season’s spooks and haunts. Here are five ideas for ghoulish entertainment…

  1. Go on a ghost tour

Explore a different side of your city led on a walking tour by guides who know the haunted local haunts! The Rocks Ghost Tours will be sure to get the hairs on your neck standing on end – their website alone is scary to look at!

  1. Make creepy cocktails

Invite the living around to your place to try a Day of the Dead Margarita, stir up a cauldron of Boozy Witch’s Brew or fill up on some Bloody Mary Syringes. Serve up snacks like these simple but hilarious Dracula’s Dentures.

  1. Host a spooky film night

Gather some friends for a night at home in the dark, playing the scariest films you can think of. Choose retro horror films like Poltergeist, Psycho, The Amityville Horror, or The Exorcist or go for some international options like The Ring (Japan) or Train to Busan (Korea). You could even put on a horror movie marathon, showing a complete series of films like the Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, or Scream franchises.

  1. Attend a séance

Everyone has a least one friend who has visited a psychic medium that they swear by … why not let your curiosity take the lead at this eerie time of year and book yourself in for an individual reading or join in a group session. At the very least you’ll have some fun as you try to reach the ‘other side’.

  1. Visit an escape room

There’s nothing like the pressure of being under a time limit AND being trapped in a room to get your pulse racing … so if you combine it with spooky elements – like these horror-themed escape rooms at LOST in Melbourne – your smart watch might soon be giving you heart rate alerts! It’s immersive fun for 2 to 8 people, so gather the bravest of your friends and family and see if you can survive the terrifying path to escape. Sydney Escape rooms.
