Innovative Brisbane-founded furniture company, SYSTM, has taken Gold in the 2023 Good Design Awards, considered the highest honour for design and innovation in Australia.
The Good Design awards are Australia’s peak international design awards, evaluating over 900 entries and are renowned for recognising architectural excellence and the critical role good design plays in creating a better, safer, and more prosperous futures.
Dr. Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia and Chair of the Australian Good Design Awards said, “To be recognised with an Australian Good Design Award tells the world this project not only represents design excellence, but it also surpasses the criteria for design innovation and design impact”.
Receiving a Good Design Award is the highest honour for design and innovation in the country and SYSTM’s innovative work, in collaboration with Clandestine Design Group, in aged care furniture was named the ultimate winner in good design, just months after launching the new product.
“The project cleverly responds to design challenges to contribute to a better environment for carers and patients,” the Good Design Awards Jury commented.
“The Jury commends the design team for creating a meaningful solution that clearly demonstrates a deep level of empathy for the most vulnerable people in our society,” said the Jury.
SYSTM is the first of its kind, in direct response to the Aged Care Commission’s findings indicating aged care residents’ independence, dignity and mobility were not priorities.
“The genesis of this came from the Royal Commission asking us to do better at aged care, we decided to take on that challenge,” founder and director, Ian Reinhardt said in his acceptance speech.
SYSTM’s innovation lies in its ability to be easily dismantled for thorough and hygienic cleaning and on-site upholstery with its unique propriety key and bolt design.
With a few clicks, furniture can be immediately reupholstered on-site with no professional help required. Providers can now also clean furniture like never before with access to every area of the chair.
While optimising hygiene and comfort, SYSTM reduces environmental and monetary waste by significantly extending the life of the chair.
Since officially launching in May 2023, SYSTM continues to sell out of stock and founder and director, Ian Reinhardt has already turned his mind to a broad range of industry sectors that will also benefit from SYSTM’s innovative technology.

Brisbane-based Clandestine Design Group is behind SYSTM’s industrial design and is also being honoured by the Good Design Awards. Clandestine Design Group is no stranger to high-quality and impactful design, awarded with thirteen Australian International Design Awards of Excellence issued by Australian International Design Awards.
