Our Fishing Secrets – We’re not called an angler’s paradise for northing with our bountiful coastline plus 150kms of the mighty Manning River. Whether you are a fanatical boat fisher, an adventurous rock or surfcaster, or simply a family with kids who enjoys relaxing with a line dangling from a jetty or breakwater, our world will satisfy your needs. Our fishing is fantastic for jewfish, snapper, perch, bream, blackfish and whiting. Deep sea fishing is also an option with charter boat hire if you don’t have your own. And just in case you have an off day the Crowdy Head Fish Co-op near where the local fishing fleets moors can rescue your reputation.
Our Way to Have Fun – Harrington celebrates its relaxed lifestyle with popular events to delight residents and visitors alike. Start the year with a bang at our New Year’s Fireworks, now the largest in the region, just one highlight of a 2 day festival of markets, sporting events and entertainment. At other times of the year there are golf, fishing and lawn bowls competitions. Everyone also turns out for the Harrington Markets held on a regular basis. For more cerebral pursuits Harrington is also host each summer to Poets by the Sea. But for all year entertainment you need look no further than the quality entertainment you will often find at our hotels and clubs.
Our Places to Play – Looking for a break from the beach then how about some golf at Harrington Waters Golf Course. This 9 hole course with its strategically positioned bunkers, natural water and lakes, and a number of tee placements ensures each game is a challenge. Still on “the green” you are always welcome at the Harrington Bowling Club which holds special events in holiday periods. Another great way to relax is to take the tranquil Manning River on a kayak. The perfect way to explore its many secluded and peaceful inlets.
Our Sand between Your Toes – You will be spoilt for choice if sun, sand and surf is what you are seeking, with our grand sweeping bays of perfect beaches. Harrington Beach stretches north to Crowdy Head and is popular for walking and fishing, with a lagoon for safe family swimming. Then there re the endless sands of Crowdy Bay, a favourite place to cool off in summer and great for long walks anytime of the year. Its South Beach is more secluded and popular with experienced board riders. North Beach is well protected and excellent for families with the Surf Lifesaving Club overlooking the bay with the summer patrols. But then the bay just goes on and on north to Diamond Head and beyond.
Our Stories – Our European history has a strong maritime flavours as captured by the creative totem characters dotted through the town. A must do for all is a visit to Crowdy Head Lighthouse (1878) designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet. A sense of history is also evident at Pilot Hill in Harrington where a monument guards the graves of the ships’ pilots lost on the dangerous set of sandbars standing just off the river mouth. Both locations will reward you with stunning views and for whale spotting during their annual migrations. History and literary buffs should also visit Kylie’s Hut near Diamond Hut. This retreat in nature was used by celebrated Australian novelist, Kylie Tennant and was the inspiration for her novel, The Man on the Headland.
