And nearby Parro-Darling National Park is home to 10s of thousands of native birds that congregate on the lakes.
When you arrive at the north-western corner of the state, Tibooburra, you will be at the furthest reaches of NSW. With the spectacular Sturt National Park on its doorstep, it’s a great base to explore the region’s magnificent gorges and rippling red sandhills. And you will daydream of the gold rush when you learn of the unique history of this former gold mining settlement.
Mount Wood Homestead, of great cultural significance, this historic homestead was built of rubble stone and erected in the late 1800s. The Mount Wood Shearers Quarters and outdoor Pastoral Museum are nearby and reflect a bygone era of attempts to tame this wild arid land. And it’s also a great base for walking and birdwatching. You really can immerse yourself in the majestic beauty of the rolling red dunes and sandstone escarpments.
Along the journey from Tibooburra to Cameron Corner you will see the world’s longest fence. Dog Fence stretches over 5000 kilometres! The drive takes the visitor through a diverse landscape including the Waka Claypan, past Fort Grey which was a provisions stockade built by explorer Charles Sturt for his inland expeditions, and finally on to the Corner.
Getting to Broken Hill is more accessible than you might think; it is well serviced by air, with Rex airlines recently joining Qantas with flights from Sydney or coach and rail connections with NSW Trains Outback Explorer are available.
