5 on the fly: how to tell if you’re a ‘Coastal Grandma’

I first heard about the ‘Coastal Grandma’ concept about a month ago when I came across an hilarious video of Jimmy Fallon teaming up with the legendary Jane Fonda on a song dedicated to coastal grandmas, inspired by the female characters in Nancy Meyers’ movies. The best thing is, you don’t even have to have grandchildren to subscribe to the aesthetic! Watch Jimmy and Jane’s 2-minute video here and then read on to see if you’re giving off big coastal grandma vibes.

  1. You take long walks on the beach

Breathing in the salty air and feeling the waves lap at your feet is an integral part of your life, either on your own or with your beloved dog.

  1. You have a capsule wardrobe

It’s filled with staple pieces in only the classic colours of white, cream, beige, tan, and shades of blue and green (and probably includes some stripes), usually made from linen and cashmere. And don’t forget the floppy straw hat!

  1. You love to cook at home

Meals (especially large salads) are made using fresh ingredients that you’ve bought at the local farmer’s market and transported home in your oversized reusable cotton canvas tote. They’re prepared in your kitchen with a butcher’s block, lots of open shelving and a bowl of lemons on the bench.

  1. Your garden has hydrangeas in it

Flowers play a big part in the coastal grandma culture. You love to tend to your garden and bring freshly picked flowers into your light, bright and airy home.

  1. You love soft furnishings

You want to create a warm and welcoming environment for your friends, so your couches are filled with sumptuous cushions in different sizes and colours (from a neutral palette of course!) and cosy throws. You also open a bottle of wine at 4pm when friends drop in.
