5 on the fly: ways to live a more minimalist life

In a world often overwhelmed with clutter and distractions, use the art of minimalism to simplify life, and focus on what truly brings joy and fulfilment. Start with these five simple tips …

  1. Experience-based gifts and celebrations

Shift the focus from material gifts to experiences. Suggest celebrating special occasions with gifts such as museum visits, cooking classes, or spa days, promoting a deeper connection and creating lasting memories.

  1. Paperless memories

To preserve memories without the clutter of physical photo albums, scan your old photos, letters, and documents. These digital copies can be stored in the Cloud or on a digital photo frame, reducing the need for physical storage.

  1. Digital decluttering

Declutter your digital life by deleting unnecessary apps, unsubscribing from email newsletters, and organising digital files. Designate ‘unplugged days’ to disconnect from screens, fostering mindfulness and real-life connections.

  1. Make it a game

Starting on the first day of the month, declutter one item. On the second day, tackle two items, and so on. By the end of the month, you’ll have cleared out 496 items! It’s fun to challenge a friend or family member to see who can last the longest in this decluttering game.

  1. Rent or borrow

Instead of buying, consider renting or borrowing items you only need temporarily. This can include formal wear, tools, luggage, seasonal decor, specialised household appliances, toys, baby gear, sporting and exercise equipment, camping gear, and gardening equipment.
