When we travel – no matter where we are – we head straight for the highest point in the city. Of course, cocktails are a welcome sight after long-haul flights and so we’re always on the lookout for the best rooftop bar. We always find views that kill and a new perspective on our location, even if it’s a city we know well. We’ve compiled a list of our top picks in some of our favourite places to visit.
Katinka & Jeremy
1. ME: Penthouse Terrace, Madrid
Plaza de Santa Ana, 14 Madrid, Spain
ME’s penthouse terrace is first in; best dressed. This celebrity hotspot is known for its queues, so if you’re keen to do a bit of star-spotting (both on the terrace and in the sky) then order your drinks and grab a seat. While there’s no shortage of great views in Madrid, this bar has a particularly good vista onto the city, making it the ideal spot for an enjoyable afternoon or glamorous evening gin & tonic.
2. SKY BAR, Bangkok
The Dome at Sate Tower, 1055 Silom Road, Bangrak,
Sky Bar should definitely be on the bucket list of every traveller while in Thailand. This rooftop bar stands as Bangkok’s highest al fresco restaurant and offers complete 360 views of the bustling cityscape. It’s an obvious choice when searching for wind-down cocktails or pre-night out drinks.
3. SUGAR: East Hotel, Hong Kong
32/F, EAST, 29 Taikoo Shing Road, Tai Koo 3738
Finding a bar in Hong Kong that serves cocktails as impressive as the views is a rare thing – so it could be said Sugar Bar is Hong Kong Island’s best-kept secret. The view of the Harbour is the perfect backdrop to the lounge and outdoor deck.
4. AER: Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai
114 Dr. E Moses Road, Worli, Mumbai
This high-energy rooftop bar has a constant buzz. The DJ keeps crowds happy with jazz, funk and club music, providing a world-away atmosphere sitting above the bustling streets of Mumbai. Enjoy a drink while taking in panoramic city and sea views, underneath a ceiling of stars.
5. THE TOP BAR: Adriana Hotel, Hvar
Fabrika, Hvar, Croatia
The Top Bar – with its multilevel garden terrace and luxurious design – has something for everyone. Whether you’re there to relax in the deep, comfy sofas, try every cocktail on the menu or dance the night away, the local village views never fail to impress.
6. HOTEL 3.14, Cannes
3.14 Cannes 5, rue François Einesy, France

8. THE GALAXY BAR: Hilton Hotel, Athens
46 Vassilissis Sofias Ave., Athens, Greece
The Galaxy Bar lives up to its name, with a spectacular galaxy ceiling of colourful explosions, stars and glowing planets. Offering nothing that isn’t chic, this bar’s individuality – in both its finger food menu and range of fabulous cocktails – makes it a very popular location for Athenians and visitors. Not to mention the breathtaking views of Athens and the Acropolis, rounding out the Greek nightlife experience.
9. UPTOWN BAR: Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Dubai
Jumeirah Beach Road, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
If you find yourself in Dubai, you have no choice but to live the high life. We love the Uptown Bar experience, with its cocktail bar and open terrace showing off the fabulous Burj Al Arab. Settle in with their extensive beverage menu that includes a huge selection of cocktails, champagnes and vintage wines… All of this along with tasty tapas and classy atmosphere, what more could you want?
10. COQ D’ARGENT, London
No. 1 Poultry, London, England
Coq D’Argent’s rooftop garden is entirely composed of lawns and ornamental box hedges – how very English! The restaurant indoors is on the pricey side, but what do you expect when schmoozing with London bankers? Enjoy a meal and drinks from here or indulge in the bar snacks which are easier on the wallet – either way, the views are worth paying for.
11. CAFÉ DEL MAR, Sydney
Rooftop Terrace of Cockle Bay Wharf, 201 Sussex Street, Sydney
Known for appealing to the food-loving partygoers, the team at Café Del Mar have certainly put on a show. Their beachside-themed rooftop terrace lures in guests from far and wide to be engulfed in the holiday cocktails and outdoor summer views of Sydney’s amazing harbour.
