Barkly Square is the community’s centre of choice and prides itself by supporting local arts, culture and the evolving neighbourhood. Locals have lovingly nicknamed the centre, Sparkly Bear.
Owned by ISPT, Barkly Square is a neighbourhood centre located on Sydney Road, a dynamic major arterial in Melbourne’s north. It is anchored by Coles, Kmart, and Woolworths and complimented by JB Hi-Fi and 38 specialty retailers. The Centre offers a vibrant fresh food mall, specialty, homewares and services stores.
The Laneway is the centre’s outdoor dining and entertainment precinct which offers a range of international cuisines in a casual dining setting. The precinct is partly covered and offers outdoor heating during the colder months. Local musicians are invited to perform in this space, providing lively entertainment throughout the week for customers to enjoy. Throughout the year, The Laneway comes alive with various activations including a dog devoted festival known as Barkly Barks, quarterly vintage markets, a flower and garden show, Christmas in July, an outdoor cinema during the summer months and much more.
Barkly Square also offers its very own Book Nook, a well-loved community book exchange. Customers are encouraged to bring their pre-loved books to swap for any books at The Book Nook. Or simply enjoy a read at a number of comfortable seating areas within the centre. The majority of books at The Book Nook are generously donated by Savers in Brunswick. This is to ensure the Book Nook is always fully stocked, that there is minimum wastage, the environment is considered and that contributed efforts are made within the local community.
Barkly Square is located 4 km from the Melbourne CBD. The centre is easily accessible via public transport with regular buses and trams operating along Sydney Road and Jewell Railway Station is a short distance west from the Centre.
